Who we are

Te Āhuru Mōwai – Homes for whānau, is committed to supporting all tenants by helping them live well in their homes.

Te Āhuru Mōwai is Aotearoa’s largest Māori owned Community Housing Provider (CHP) based in beautiful Porirua.

Te Āhuru Mōwai operates a whānau focused service that is aligned with the tikanga and values of Te Rūnanga o Toa Rangatira Inc. Our service objectives include provision and maintenance of warm dry homes for tenants, increasing housing choice including home ownership options as a future objective and generally contributing to improved wellbeing outcomes for the wider community.

As part of our role in managing the homes Te Āhuru Mōwai will progressively upgrade the portfolio over time to ensure that all homes are warm dry and fit for purpose. There are prospects for progressive purchase, redevelopment, and growth in housing supply.

Under a partnership with the New Zealand Government, Te Rūnanga o Toa Rangatira (Ngāti Toa), established a registered community housing provider. Te Āhuru Mōwai Limited Partnership (“Te Āhuru Mōwai”), entered into a Public Housing and Project agreement to manage and upgrade 950 homes in Western Porirua and parts of Tawa. These homes provide tenancies for people on very low incomes with social support needs. They are in the suburbs of Tawa, Elsdon, Takapūwāhia, Titahi Bay and Mana (Western Porirua) and were transferred from Kāinga Ora (formally Housing New Zealand) management on 3 October 2020. All tenants have been placed from the governments public housing register.

Te Āhuru Mōwai, a Tier 1 reporting entity, is wholly owned by Te Rūnanga o Toa Rangatira Incorporated - charitable organisation and is independently governed by its own Board of Directors.

Te Āhuru Mōwai is connected to Te Rūnanga o Toa Rangatira through its objective’s values and overall purpose. Te Āhuru Mōwai will ensure that Ngāti Toa is a strong and influential iwi firmly grounded in ‘the cultural identity of Ngāti Toa, while at all times leading change to enable whānau wellbeing and prosperity.

About Te Āhuru Mōwai Limited Partnership

Te Āhuru Mōwai name and logo

The name was chosen by Tā Matiu Rei of Ngāti Toa Rangatira meaning ‘A sheltering haven’.

The koru patterns in the design represent new life, new beginnings and growth in community housing. The triangular shape of the design depicts housing which shelters the koru patterns (sheltering the new beginnings, the people and allowing growth in a safe haven). The design has been split into two sides. This represents the people and the Ngāti Toa iwi on one side and the housing haven on the other side. The notion of having two sides, allows the representation of unity among the iwi/people and the housing.

The logo was designed by Fetu Ese (Ngāti Toa).
