Keep Your Home Warm & Dry This Winter

Winter in Aotearoa can be damp and chilly, but there are simple steps you can take to make your whare warmer, healthier, and easier to heat.

Top Tips for a Warm, Dry Home:

Ventilate daily – Open windows for 15–20 minutes a day to let out moisture

Use extractor fans – in the bathroom and kitchen when showering or cooking

Dry washing outside – or use a vented dryer if possible to avoid damp air inside

Wipe down windows and sills – to reduce condensation

Deal with mould early – wipe with vinegar and water (not bleach!)

Keep furniture away from cold walls – allow air to flow freely

Use a safe, dry heater – like a heat pump, oil column or electric heater

Remember: A warm, dry home is not just more comfortable—it also keeps your whānau healthier and helps prevent respiratory illness, especially for tamariki and kaumātua.
